Tour Description

Maras is a small town located at the west of Cusco at 3300 meters above sea level, from there you can see the Urubamba mountain range. The town only got inhabited when the elite of the Incas were stripped of their palaces in Cusco and had to leave to settle in other small towns such as Maras. Maras has a church made of adobe, with typical local architecture.

Moray is located about 7 km. southwest of Maras, its archaeological site is the only one of its kind. The archaeological site consists of a set of terraces that houses a variety of microclimates, from the first tier to the last. These terraces were used for agriculture with their respective irrigation channels. It is a prototype greenhouse or biological experimental station, quite advanced for its time.

Salineras or “salt mines”

The salt mines of Maras consist of about 3000 small wells. During the dry season the wells are are filled or “irrigated” every 3 days with salt water that emanates from a natural spring located at the top of the wells. When the water evaporates, the salt it contains solidifies, then the salt is beaten and granulated.
